Toronto, prepare for lift-off!

On the weekend of October 19th - 21st 2018, developers, makers, engineers and entrepreneurs will take on NASA-designed challenges, creating solutions that range from silly to serious, fantastical to feasible. Build a team, pick a challenge, and leverage your access to an extraordinary roster of mentors featuring past and present astronauts, aerospace engineers, and designers.

Toronto, we have lift-off!

And the first time ever, the Canadian Space Agency provided their own challenges for Canadian teams!

About

Running annually since 2012, the International Space Apps Challenge brings coders, designers, entrepreneurs and makers together from across the globe to take on a series of challenges developed by NASA. Last year, more than 25140 hackers participated from 187 cities in 69 countries, creating over 2017 projects! During the intense 48-hour hackathon, teams will form and produce solutions that leverage NASA's extensive spacecraft, celestial and science data. Together, we'll make space and Earth more accessible, visual and fun to explore.

Will the event be catered?

We will not providing some meals for this event. However, we will have coffee and water available for everyone, and there are a lot of great food options within walking distance! More information will be provided as we near the event itself!

Jeremy R. Hansen

Astronaut, Canadian Space Agency

LCol Hansen was one of two recruits selected by the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) in May 2009 through the third Canadian Astronaut Recruitment Campaign. He is one of 14 members of the 20th National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) astronaut class. In 2011, LCol Hansen graduated from Astronaut Candidate Training, which included scientific and technical briefings, intensive instruction in International Space Station (ISS) systems, Extravehicular Activities (EVAs, or spacewalks), robotics, physiological training, T-38 flight training, Russian language courses, and sea and wilderness survival training.

While waiting for a flight assignment, LCol Hansen represents CSA at NASA, and works at the Mission Control Center as Capcom—the voice between the ground and the ISS.

James Costa is the Founder and CEO of Phuse, a digital user experience agency. In his spare time, James organizes the Toronto Agency Owner Meetup, co-founded Positive Gear, an organization that speaks and works with youth to empower them towards positive change, and is on the Board of Directors for the Trek for Teens Foundation, an organization that raises funds and awareness for youth homelessness in Toronto. When James isn't in Starbucks trying to catch up on his ever-growing to do list, he can be found playing XBOX with his son.

Community Engagement Coordinator at The Working Group

Oksana is the Community Engagement Coordinator at TWG, a Toronto based software development agency. She also helps manage Toronto Community Builders, a group dedicated to codify best practices in community management. Oksana was on the organizing team for TechStars Startup Next, a pre-accelerator program for early stage technology companies. Oksana and Kevin partnered to launch a weather balloon into near space armed with a GoPro. Oksana gets out of bed everyday excited to foster a strong tech community and geek out on space hacking projects.

Kevin James Hunt

Development Lead at Quickplay Media

Kevin is an iOS and TVOS development team lead at Quickplay Media. He has lead design and development of live and video-on-demand streaming applications for Rogers, Bell, AT&T;, Telus, SingTel, and many more for iPhone, iPad, and even AppleTV. In his spare time, he builds his own apps independently, plays with any tech he can get his hands on, hangs out in the 5000-ball ball-pit on his balcony, and works on the CubeSat he plans on sending to space.
